In the last year, Riverbed marketing engine defines a new wording in the monitoring market: “Unified Observability“. Observability was introduced already a couple of years ago and is the evolution of monitoring. It is the ability to measure the internal states of a system by examining its outputs. A system is considered “observable” if the current state can be estimated by only using information from outputs, namely sensor data.

Observability is mostly used in a silo scenario: Only one application or domain of the IT was monitored and the big picture across different perspectives was missed: A network team maybe not recognized the user experience from a laptop in the home office.

The combination of different perspectives (such as Device, Application, Network and Infrastructure) is now called Unified Observability. Other software vendors like VMware, Elastic and LogicMonitor using this new definition now too.
